This Weeks Spotlights

Ui Afualo:

Born and Raised- She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but her family moved to Orem when she was five years old so her dad could go to school. They stayed, so Ui was mostly raised in Utah. Ui, Dan, and the boys go back to Hawaii every 2-3 years to visit their families.

How they met- Ironically, Ui and Dan both lived in the same small town in Hawaii but never met. They both attended BYU Provo where she worked in the multi-cultural office and as secretary of Polynesian club. Dan’s cousins were in the presidency, so they would meet at Dan’s house often. She noticed he alway sat in the back. A group of them went to a dance club one night, and Ui asked him to dance, but it still took him a month to get up the courage to ask her out. They dated for 12 months and were engaged for 11 months. They have been married now for almost 19 years.

Family- Ui and Dan have all boys! Tama 17, Kekoa 13, Nui 11, Kolu 6, Kapono 4

Schooling and Career- She graduated from BYU Provo in Elementary Ed. She has taught off and on since graduating and worked at George Washington this past year. Next year, she will be teaching at Bare Foot Montessori to be with Kapono.

Hobbies and free time- She loves being outside especially camping. She plays volleyball, tennis, pickle ball, basketball, and softball. She doesn’t really have free time now days, but she loves watching her kids play sports. She also sells Do Terra for its natural healing abilities.

Travel- She was a part of Lamanite Generation which was a group who would go around putting on firesides by performing native dances and baring testimony. They traveled all over South and Central America to places like Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Wherever they traveled, the missionary work would increase because of the spirit the group brought.

Favorite Calling- She has had too many callings that she has loved to pick just one. She’s been primary chorister, young women’s president, cub scouts, boy scouts, primary teacher, and right now she is our emergency preparedness expert.

Something Unique About Her- If she sets a goal, she always accomplishes it. Ui’s goal for the past 7 years has been to be self-sustainable. She loves to bake from scratch which includes grinding her own flour! She has goats and chickens to get eggs and milk. She also cans, pressure cooks, gardens, and has a year supply! She is amazing!!! She is totally self taught. She learned everything from Youtube or gathering information on the internet. She says that anyone can do it if they have the drive and ambition!
